Malaysia
Malaysia
This is the first location we landed after leaving the UK and it holds a special place in our heart. We travelled to Penang, Langkawi, Malacca and Kuala Lumpur.
Our First Impressions.
Malaysia is bursting with tropical life, from the mosquitos to the rare Dusky leaf monkeys. Everywhere you look is bursting with greenery. The humidity of this tropical destination is an initial shock, but you learn to embrace the heat and sun with a mixture of extreme tropical storms. Malaysia is also steeped in history and incredibly diverse throughout the country, celebrating many different festivals from different cultures all year long.
Was the language barrier hard?
This country was a perfect place to start our travels. We were shocked with how widely English was spoken and understood, which made it easy to navigate around. Especially when travelling with young children the ease of being able to communicate was important
Everyones favourite, Food.
Food variety in Malaysia was incredible, with such a large range available. From local dishes such as the Ramley burger, Nasi Lemak and Rendang curries to western dishes such as burgers, chips and dare I say it CHICKEN NUGGETS and Pizza! There was always something to fill our bellies.
Are there any SuperMarkets/Stores?
We found local supermarkets such as Jaya Grocer, Lotus, Village Grocer and Mercato which were fabulous to do a weekly shop. In these shops there was a large range again from local produce all the way to the imported goods, where we could buy in some home comforts.
Transport and Getting around places.
We found the use of public transport was cheap, clean and efficient. Another way of getting around that we used was a Taxi or ‘Grab’. You can easily order a taxi by downloading the Grab app, we also used this app to order food deliveries and our weekly shop. In a few locations we even rented a Car as in Malaysia they do drive on the same side of the road as the UK!
The ease of finding out information as a family whilst travelling around this country was fantastic. Malaysia holds a special place in our hearts with its diversity, beauty and how accessible we found it.
